Are all controlled substances illegal to possess?

If you're caught using drugs or misusing prescription medications not prescribed to you, you could be accused of being in possession of a controlled substance. Controlled substances are usually seen as drugs that are illegal. They are highly regulated by the state and federal governments.

If you are caught in possession of controlled substances, you could face penalties including fines and prison sentences. You can be charged at the state or federal level. In some cases, people are charged at both levels.

Are all controlled substances illegal?

No, and in fact, many people possess controlled substance by prescription. For instance, opioid drugs may be available by prescription to help patients manage pain. However, if you're in possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, you may find yourself in violation of the law despite the drug having some medicinal purposes.

What kinds of controlled substances are there?

Controlled substances come in five categories. They include Schedule I, II, III, IV and V drugs. People may be able to purchase Schedule V drugs, like cough syrups with codeine, legally, whereas Schedule I drugs may be illegal in all cases and do not have a medical use.

If you're accused of possessing prohibited or restricted drugs, it's important to protect yourself as soon as possible. Drug charges have the potential to ruin your life if you let them. A solid defense can help you prove that you're not a drug dealer or someone looking to cause trouble, which helps you walk away with fewer, or no, penalties after working with the court.
